Oh the humble medium of concrete. From cement candleholders to cinderblock patio benches, it has been said that “cement is the new pallet” in the world of DIY, and I’m inclined to agree.
If you know anything about Poppy Soap, it should come as no surprise that I’m drawn to organic mediums – and cement is no exception. As we wind down this month-long celebration of makers and making, I thought I’d share a few of my favorite cement-inspired crafts. After a quick read through these simple tutorials (and perhaps a quick run to your local hardware store), I encourage you to raise your maker flag and unleash your inner passion for DIY. (And be sure to snap a photo and tag us @PoppySoap on Instagram to show us your handiwork.)
How elegant (and simple!) is little concrete ring bowl? A perfect landing pad for your favorite jewels at the end of the day, I think it would make a stylish addition to any bathroom. (Or an equally unexpected and delightful hostess gift.)
If you don’t have a chimnea or backyard fire pit, this cool little fire bowl is a must-have for every tabletop once the sun goes down. (Marshmallows and graham crackers optional.)
Whether you’re using these guys as bookends, doorstops or decorative pieces, they bring a dose of organic style to any space. Love ‘em!
With Easter just around the corner, this DIY craft is perfectly timely. If pastel colors, dipping, dying and hard-boiling aren’t your thing, these cement eggs make an excellent alternative to the real thing. If you have little ones who want to partake, load up their paintbrushes and have them turn grey eggs into colorful masterpieces.
Funny thing about genius ideas, sometimes you just know it when you see it. Looking for a way to add some stylish, inexpensive additional seating your outdoor space this spring? Problem solved. The materials for this cinder block bench ring in at under $50 (not including the pad). Hooray!
