A Natural Approach to Home

Lavender essential oil

Did you know the air inside an average home is 2-5x more polluted than the air outdoors – partly due to harsh cleaners and chemicals we tend to use to clean our homes? True story. The EPA actually considers indoor air quality one of the top environmental risks to public health. Yuck.

While the products we make at Poppy Soap take a healthy, sustainable, natural approach to beauty, I’m all for finding kinder, gentler, more natural ways of doing things in every aspect of my life. Home is where we should feel our healthiest and happiest, after all.

One of the bet things about natural ingredients is that they can wield their magic in so many different ways. From facial scrubs to scrubbing kitchen counters, there’s almost always a more natural option out there if you’re willing to invest just the tiniest bit of work ahead of time. Over the next couple weeks, I’ll share a few fabulous DIY recipes that will arm you with nature-inspired, chemical-free alternatives for making your home a more beautiful place.

Between kids and pets, carpeting tends to take a beating. It also absorbs things we wish it hadn’t. Never fear! The solution is awaits in your cupboard.

Natural Carpet Deodorizer + Refresher

1 c. baking soda

20 drops of the essential oil of your choice

Thoroughly mix baking soda with essential oil. Pour mixture into a container (keep an eye out for one of these parmesan cheese-type jars at your local dollar store for easy sprinkling) and sprinkle over carpet or rug. Allow mixture to sit for 15 minutes up to 24 hours. Vacuum as usual.

Bonus points: open your windows and let the house take a deep breath while you do the same.

What are some of your favorite natural house and home recipes?
